About the Event
The MCA and Bodies of Work invite you to Access Praxis, an annual collaborative event in The Commons. Combining theory and practice, “praxis” is ideas in action; in this case, Access Praxis brings ideas about disability arts and culture into reality.
For this iteration of Access Praxis, we are joined by Ariella Granados, a recent 3 Arts/Bodies of Work Residency artist, who speaks about their extensive practice, including how the disabled experience is explored within their work. For this presentation, Granados premieres a suite of short videos in conjunction with their talk, focusing on a set of six separate dioramas.

About Bodies of Work
Bodies of Work is a consortium of four programs at three Chicago organizations that share a commitment to programming that is distinguished by its integration of disability artistry, academics, and activism:
- Program on Disability Art, Culture, and Humanities and the Disability Cultural Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago;
- Disability Culture Activism Lab at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago;
- Art and Culture Project at Access Living.
Along with partnering artists and organizations, Bodies of Work serves as a catalyst for the development of disability art and culture that illuminates the disability experience in new and unexpected ways.
About the Artist
Ariella Granados is a multidisciplinary artist based in Chicago whose work uses video, sound, costuming, make up, and sculpture to explore the liminal space between fiction and truth. Their work integrates green as a signifier of rendering the disabled body against the complexity of the sociopolitical landscape. Granados’s work is intertwined with the consumer’s inability to not be fully satisfied with the consumption of commodities. Utilizing dynamic worldbuilding techniques they critique the body as a commodity itself, offering their own lived experience as a bicultural person. Through their work, Granados invites the viewer into a world where they must confront questions of agency and authenticity.
Granados holds a BFA from The University of Illinois at Chicago. They are a former 3Arts/Bodies of Work Residency artist and an inaugural artist in residence with DCASE and The Mayors Office for People with Disabilities.
