About

Brian Ulrich’s photographs depict the excesses of a consumer-dominated culture. Ulrich began this series in 2001 when Americans were admonished to shop in order to boost the economy. His photographs present individuals in exorbitant and sometimes hyper-real retail spaces that are often considered tourist sites. These photographs, both intimate and public, document not only the everyday activity of shopping, but also the economic, cultural, social, and political implications of commerce.
