Photo: Saalik A. ZiyadSummer Tuesdays come alive on the MCA’s Anne and John Kern Terrace Garden with free music highlighting artists from Chicago’s internationally renowned jazz community. This ensemble, fronted by Art Turk Burton on congas, blends Afro-Cuban beats and classical jazz. Edwin Daugherty on saxophones and flutes, Eddie Beard on piano, Yosef Ben Israel on bass, Dushun Mosley on drums, and Sammie Torres on Latin Percussion round out the group.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Art Turk Burton received a full scholarship for jazz percussion to attend Governors State University and played in the GSU Jazz Band under Dr. Warrick Carter; he received his BA and MA degrees in African American Studies. A member of the Chicago-based Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) since 1973, Burton has shared musical experiences with Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Waits, and many others. He was elected 2011 Chairman of the AACM, and currently serves as AACM Secretary. He has played the bongo and conga drums professionally for over 40 years. In recent years Burton has performed in Renee Baker’s Chicago Modern Orchestra Project, the AACM’s Great Black Music Ensemble, and the South Side Big Band led by Tom Washington. Art Turk Burton has led the Congo Square Artistic Ensemble for over 30 years. Inspired by Congo Square in historic New Orleans, the ensemble’s music is a continuum of sounds that have enriched creative and cultural American musical traditions.
