SPACE Final Project: Sanctuary, at Curie Metro High School

Announcement

This event takes place at Curie Metropolitan High School, 4959 S Archer Ave. Please contact Lydia Ross for more information.

A festival of free, public art actions focused on concepts of safe space and positive neighborhood change

As part of the MCA's SPACE (School Partnership for Art and Civic Engagement) program, Curie Metro High School's Multimedia Art class has spent the year working with Resident Artist Andres L. Hernandez to explore ideas around community safety and youth empowerment. Together students asked: How do we (re)activate spaces in which we feel we have no power? How do we create spaces where young people can be their authentic selves?

The MCA and Curie Metro invite the public to join us for an afternoon of performances, workshops, and dialogue. In Lost Miami Bowl, students consider the loss of a former neighborhood gathering space, now a vacant lot, as well as its future potential. Contribute to the Safety Ne(s)t by sharing your definitions of community safety. Construct your own sanctuary in Home, Tweet, Home. Celebrate your right to free public speech with Sanctuary Soap Box and poetry flash mobs.

A group of people stand around an empty lot on a cold gray day. A figure in the center points to the left and several people look in that direction.
