I Really Want to Know: Structuring Open Questions for Classroom Dialogue

While active discussions can seem to emerge in a casual and natural way, facilitators often work carefully to provide the necessary structure and support for open dialogue. Delving into a variety of artworks in this rich collection-based exhibition, this workshop serves as a laboratory for exploring the nuts and bolts of dialogic work in the classroom and museum.

How do we frame truly open questions? What are some ways to engage with new content to open up discussion but still include clear instructions and handling of learning standards? How do we acknowledge our own beliefs and practices while encouraging students to own their opinions? Using written and drawn responses to artworks in this exhibit, we explore and refine the concept of an open question, discuss other requirements for constructive dialogue, and think critically about the role that contemporary art can play in these conversations.

MCA teacher programs are FREE for Illinois teachers. Participants receive CPDUs. Vouchers for free parking in the MCA garage are provided pending availability.
