| Come curious! Explore the world
of H. C. Westermann, an American sculptor and printmaker who produced
inventive and deftly executed sculptures and prints from the 1950s to
1981. To study Westermann’s work is to examine the ideas, events, and
conflicts that characterized our nation’s history during that period.
This website provides useful information, interdisciplinary classroom
activities, discussion questions, and instructional resources to help
teachers integrate the works and life of this highly original American
artist into your classroom curriculum. The H. C. Westermann Teacher Curriculum was developed in conjunction with two retrospectives held in Chicago in 2001: H. C. Westermann at the Museum of Contemporary Art and See America First: The Prints of H. C. Westermann at the Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago. Designed for those who teach grades six through twelve, this site offers the opportunity to explore Westermann’s world through themes, individual works of art, comparisons of sculptures with prints, a biographical sketch of the artist, and a timeline contextualizing his life with other events. The exhibition See America First: The Prints of H. C. Westermann at The David and Alfred Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago, its catalogue, teachers’ website, and related programs are made possible by funds from Robert and Joan Feitler, Raymond Smart, and the Smart Family Foundation. This exhibition is also supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional funding for the museum’s programs provided by Nuveen Investments; Chicago Community Trust; and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. Support for H. C. Westermann and its associated publications is generously provided by Mary and Roy Cullen, The LLWW Foundation, Anstiss and Ronald Krueck, Henry and Gilda Buchbinder, Ruth P. Horwich, Susan and Lewis Manilow, Dorothy and Alan Press, Helen and Sam Zell, The Kovler Family Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, Marie Krane Bergman and Robert H. Bergman, Carol and Douglas Cohen, The Judith Rothschild Foundation, Mrs. Edwin A. Bergman, Robert and Sylvie Fitzpatrick, and Thurston and Sharon Twigg-Smith. The H. C. Westermann Film Series is made possible in part by a grant from the Illinois Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Illinois General Assembly. The Elizabeth Morse Charitable Trust is the generous sponsor of education programs for H. C. Westermann. Media support for this exhibition is provided by the Chicago Sun-Times. All works by H. C.
