Dance Exchange project
Tea Servers wanted
Nov 6–13, 2011
The MCA and the CHF are seeking dancers or performers for an exciting opportunity to participate in an experience that will challenge your performative skills and partner you with an international team of professional dancers. Volunteer performers will train and perform with the Dance Exchange in a performance of Liz Lerman’s The Matter of Origins—students are welcome.
The performance is in two acts: Act One take place onstage and is a dance-theatre performance that contemplates the mystery and science of beginnings—from the origins of the universe, to the development of the atomic bomb, to the makings of friendship. Act Two takes the form of a “Tea”—an interactive experience where audience members sit at tables, enjoy cake, and participate in a conversation sparked by the history, ethics, and metaphors presented in Act One.
During Act Two, the volunteers will be the “Tea Servers” and act as interactive hosts who serve cake, operate iPads, engage with audience members, and perform alongside company members. In rehearsals, Tea Servers will be asked to learn set material, as well as generate new material for each particular tea. Additionally, the National Science Foundation is studying “Tea” as a science-delivery system, so Tea Servers will distribute and collect measurement devices that assess the audience’s experience through the course of the evening.
Dancers must be available for all of the following times:
- Sun, Nov 6 (rehearsal), 6-9 pm
- Mon, Nov 7 (rehearsal), 6-10 pm
- Tue, Nov 8 (rehearsal), 2:30-5 pm
- Wed, Nov 9 (dress rehearsal), 2:30-5 pm and 6:30-10 pm
- Thu, Nov 10 - Sunday, Nov 13 (4 performances), 6:30-10 pm
