Tiger Hatchery opens
Modern experimentalists Matmos and So Percussion are combining forces for this one-night-only concert on the occasion of the record release of Treasure State, a startling new collaboration between these two rogue American groups. "Musique-concrete" oddballs widely known for their collaboration with Bjork, electronic duo Matmos are infamous for turning bizarre sound sources (from plastic surgery to live snails) into shuffling rhythmic pop. Brooklyn-based quartet So Percussion are acclaimed virtuosic performers of classical and avant-garde writing for percussion. Known for playing the music of Steve Reich, David Lang, and Paul Lansky, they are increasingly recognized as composers in their own right. This live show is bound to be an explosive mix of playful and compelling sonic explorations of an American musical landscape.

Matmos is M.C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel, aided and abetted by many others. In their recordings and live performances over the past 10 years, Matmos have used the sounds of: amplified crayfish nerve tissue, the pages of bibles turning, the runout groove of a vinyl record, chin implant surgery, contact microphones on human hair, violins, tanks of helium, peck horns, cards shuffling, field recordings of conversations in hot tubs, frequency response tests for defective hearing aids, a steel guitar recorded in a sewer, electrical interference generated by laser eye surgery, whoopee cushions and balloons, rhinestones on a dinner plate, Polish trains, dogs barking, people reading aloud, life support systems, rock salt crunching underfoot, solid gold coins spinning on bars of solid silver, the sound of a frozen stream thawing in the sun, and a five gallon bucket of oatmeal to name a few.

So Percussion creates music that is both raucous and touching, barbarous and heartfelt. Their music runs the gamut from percussion classics (Steve Reich's Drumming), to new commissions (David Lang's the so-called laws of nature), to original music (group member Jason Treuting's Amid the Noise). Called "astonishing and entrancing" by Billboard Magazine, and "brilliant" by the New York Times, the Brooklyn-based quartet's innovative work has quickly helped them forge a unique and diverse career. So Percussion has performed this music all over the United States, with concerts at the Lincoln Center Festival, Carnegie Hall, Stanford Lively Arts, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Recent tours to Russia, Australia, Italy, Spain, Germany, and the Ukraine have brought them international acclaim.
