One of the boldest voices in contemporary theater, playwright and director Young Jean Lee tackles the Black experience and African-American identity politics in her new play, The Shipment. For this work, Lee, a Korean American, challenged herself to create a "Black identity-politics show," addressing social norms that she herself finds uncomfortable. The result is a provocative and eclectic work, which includes song, dance, stand-up comedy, sketches, and a short drama, performed by five talented actors who show off Lee's acid wit and subversive style.
Running Time: 1 hour 30 min (no intermission), no late seating

Open Doors: The Shipment
Thursday, March 25, 10 am to 1 pm
FREE, with museum admission
Museum visitors are invited to drop in to observe the artists at work in the theater on the production's final stages. Enjoy a rare glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes just days before a show opens to the public. Written and directed by Korean-American playwright Young Jean Lee, The Shipment is a sharply satirical examination of identity politics. A provocative but humorous play centered on cultural depictions, The Shipment includes song, dance, stand-up comedy, sketches, and a short drama.
American Theater: Writing for Change
Tuesday, March 23, 6 to 8 pm
FREE, reservations recommended, call the MCA Box Office, 312.397.4010
Join some of today's brightest playwrights who are saying something new about the American experience, in the migrant's view and that of descendants of the Mayflowers and Amistads of history. They tap our up-to-the-moment national consciousness to make theater that is pumping with the music and language of the largest cross-current of people to ever come together in one land. Jonathan Wilson, director of TimeLine's 'Master Harold'...and the Boys, moderates the discussion between Young Jean Lee, author of The Shipment, Tanya Saracho, adapter of Steppenwolf's The House on Mango Street, Kristoffer Diaz, author of the off-Broadway bound The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Diety, and others to be announced.
