Chicago’s illustrious contemporary music makers imagine the future of musical expression in an increasingly global and technologically complex culture. Sonic Impact tests the roles of composer, performer, and concert hall in the advent of global change in this unprecedented intensive festival of concerts, talks, and interactive installations taking place in the theater and galleries. Running day and night, each date is packed with extraordinary musicianship that engages the ear as it stimulates thought. This project honors the visiting British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage and is produced with New Music Chicago and its acclaimed member groups.
New Music Chicago is an association of seventeen contemporary music ensembles formed to promote new music and to build an audience for music being composed today. Its ensembles work with one another to coordinate performances, building a community of working artists within the city.
Sonic Impact comes to the MCA as a channel for these new music artists to place their work in a contemporary setting, exploring technology’s contact with society and the shifting responsibility and function of composers. The program includes Chicago premieres of works by composers Joseph Schwantner, Seth Boustead, Gordon Beeferman, and Kevin James.
