Contempo and the Dave Douglas Quintet

April 7, 2007

Tickets $24, MCA members $19, students $10

The University of Chicago Contemporary Chamber Players (Contempo) returns to the MCA after the sell-out debut with Patricia Barber to unite the best from the jazz and classical music worlds.

Under the artistic direction of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Shulamit Ran, Contempo and special guests including soprano Tony Arnold perform a program of intensely personal creations by three visionary composers — Toru Takemitsu, George Crumb, and the Georgian/Israeli Josef Bardanashvili.

The restless originator Dave Douglas, whose impressive range reaches from composing for the poetry of Samuel Beckett and the choreography of Trisha Brown to being named as trumpeter of the year by DownBeat, completes the intriguing double-bill with his formidable quintet featuring composer-pianist Uri Caine, Donny McCaslin on tenox sax, James Genus on bass, and Clarence Penn on drums.
