The vibrant sound of taarab music — "get you moving" in Swahili — reflects centuries of cultural contact between Indian Ocean traders and East Africa and is forever remembered for its embrace by Zanzibar's independence movement. This is a rare chance to hear one of Africa's largest orchestras in the intimate MCA Theater.

For this special concert, dynamo percussionist Kahil El'Zabar integrates young French jazz musicians with his formidable Ethnic Heritage Ensemble featuring Joseph Bowie and Ernest Khabeer Dawkins. The double bill tops out with the inventive São Paulo Underground, led by the restlessly inventive cornetist Rob Mazurek and guitarist Mauricio Takara.
