Now in its sixteenth year, CHRP celebrates tap dance’s Eastern and Western links with Tapeplas, a new group from Barcelona whose BoomBach bursts with emotion and intriguing movements suggestive of Bachian fugal counterpoint infused with Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern dance traditions.
Opening for Tapeplas as part of Friday’s benefit soiree for CHRP, a stellar trio of women tappers from Los Angeles and New York give an exclusive performance of Charlie’s Angels: A Rhythmic Tribute to Charlie Parker. On Saturday and Sunday, Emmy Award–winner Jason Samuels Smith and Pandit Chitresh Das, master of the classic Indian dance Kathak, open with India Jazz Suites, their triumphant collaboration accompanied by live jazz piano and tanpuri.
CHRP leads Chicago, the nation, and the world as one of the oldest and most innovative presenters of tap, percussive and rhythmic dance. Co-founded by Lane Alexander and Kelly Michaels in 1988, CHRP has grown over the last 15 years from a one-week summer festival into the first year-round presenting organization dedicated to the American art form of tap. Their commitment to inclusion, bridge building, long-term collaboration, education, performance, innovation and — perhaps most importantly — economic investment in the local communities they work with has been the key to CHRP’s phenomenal growth.
