The tour begins at 9:30 am in the MCA's Robert B. and Beatrice C. Mayer Education Center lobby with an introduction to Production Site: The Artist's Studio Inside-Out. Then, Joan Arenberg of Art on the Move Tours leads the group on a journey throughout the city to visit the studios of Production Site artists Justin Cooper, Deb Sokolow, and John Neff, and enjoy lunch at Wishbone on Washington Boulevard before returning to the MCA.

A Special Evening with Lucinda Childs and Philip Glass

The MCA is thrilled to welcome the Lucinda Childs Dance Company and Philip Glass for the 2009 Performance Benefit. One of the country's leading choreographers and an original member of the Judson Dance Theater in New York, Lucinda Childs created her landmark work DANCE in 1979 with mesmerizing music by Philip Glass and film by Sol LeWitt. This performance is a newly reconstructed work.

Donors also viewed a special projection on the facade of the museum after dark.

40 Free Days

On September 29 the MCA launched a public celebration of its 40th anniversary with free admission to the museum for 40 fun-filled days of events, including open art studios, on-site artist demonstrations, and curator conversations. Nearly 80,000 visitors and more than 1,000 new members took part in the festivities.

Art & the Law! Corporate Art Collections in downtown Chicago

In October we will visit the Sidley Austin art collection which includes more than 900 pieces of contemporary art by many of the most recognized contemporary artists of the 20th century including Joel Shapiro, Robert Mangold, Robert Motherwell and Pat Steir. The art collection of one of the nation's largest law firms has been assembled over the past 20 years and it is now housed in their signature facility at One South Dearborn. Dinner to follow at Ruby of Siam. In November, we will visit Kirkland & Ellis LLP, which is housed in a new building designed by Pickard Chilton, Kirkland & Ellis' collection includes many site specific works of art. Proposals were submitted by artists from around the country. Consideration was given to representing a diversity of artists and styles so as to balance the ideas between representational work and abstraction. Artists included are Richard Hunt, Spencer Finch, Jeremy Long, Terence La Noue and Stephen Powell.

Next we'll weave through the modern art and sentimental collection of a textile artist and designer in Lincoln Park. After lunch, we'll journey back to the ‘20s and ‘30s for a final treat - a docent-led tour of one of the most comprehensive private collections of Chicago Modernist paintings at DePaul University.

North Shore Affiliates traveled to the South Side for a visit at the Hyde Park Art Center's renowned new facility, complete with a docent led tour and a talk by the building's architect Douglas Garofalo. A delightful afternoon of African art followed with a tour of a private collection, followed by a trip to a Bronzeville gallery to see Andre Guichard's work as well as that of local artists and Senegalese art.

Chicago's own Edgar Miller, the wildly prolific architect and artist, expressed his craft through many media: stained glass, ceramics, mosaics, wood carving, painting, sculpture, and printmaking as well as graphic, furniture, and interior design. North Side Affiliates experienced a rare opportunity to enter the private world of Edgar Miller by visiting two enduring works in the heart of one of the most influential artists' communities: Old Town.

A Day in Hyde Park

West Suburban Affiliates experienced one of Frank Lloyd Wright's little Prairie Houses in the city. Mostly restored to its original form, the Robie House prefigures our 21st-century desire for ample light, space, and craftsmanship. The affiliates enjoyed a docent-led tour of this recently reopened space, then experienced cutting-edge art on the South Side with a guided tour at the Hyde Park Art Center.
