PART TWO | Massive Change in the City

Museums in the Park Activities
September 15, 2006 April 1, 2007
The Field Museum presents an exhibition that resonates with the ideas of Massive Change. Learn about the nineteenth-century friar who became the father of modern genetics, recreate Mendel’s famous pea experiments to discover the laws of heredity, and meet modern Mendels scientists on the cutting edge of this field today.
This exhibition and its North American tour were developed by The Field Museum, Chicago, in partnership with The Vereinigung zur Forderung der Genomforschung, Vienna, Austria, and the Mendel Museum, Brno, Czech Republic.
CLASS: "Sustainable Technologies: Mars and Earth"
Wednesdays, September 6-27, 6:30-8:30 pm, Fee: $100 ($80 members)
Dr. Bil Becker, University of Illinois at Chicago
The "Inconvenient Truth" of global climate change forces us to create innovative, sustainable technologies for Earth that could make the colonization of Mars passible. In this four-part course, Industrial Design Professor Bil Becker explores cutting-edge technologies that could support life on Mars - and may be necessary to support future life on Earth. (four sessions)
CLASS: "Astronomy Visualization: The State of the Art"
Wednesday, October 25, 6:30-8:30 pm, Fee:$25 ($15 members)
Dr. Doug Roberts, Astronomer Adler Planetarium and Northwestern University, Dr. Mark SubbaRao, Astronomer Adler Planetarium and the University of Chicago
Scientific visualization has become a mainstream technique to understand out Universe and space science leads the way. Explore current astronomical visualizations from around the world and take a sneak peak at plans for the Adler's new Space Visualization Laboratory. See how our 2D and 3D views of massive data sets can help scientists learn how vast systems work - from nearby events like particle showers slamming into Earth's atmosphere to the structure of distant galaxy clusters. (one session)
