This Will Have Been: Art, Love & Politics in the 1980s
Feb 11–Jun 3, 2012
It’s hard to imagine the 1980s without a soundtrack, whether it’s the decade’s pop music, its classic hip-hop records, or the hardcore punk scene at clubs like New York’s CBGB. As a complement to This Will Have Been: Art, Love & Politics in the 1980s, five artists whose work appears in the exhibition have made “mix tapes,” or playlists, that you can enjoy on MCA iPods as you walk through the galleries. These artists all have deep—yet different—connections to the music of this time. By choosing songs that were meaningful to them then, the artists share their unique perspectives on the eighties. These may be the songs the artists played in the studio or danced to with their friends, but they’re also testaments to the larger cultural climate of the decade.
