Working in various media including photography, sculpture, and video, Gander’s work is characterized by simplicity and a conceptual approach that at first appears elusive and obscure. These companion works demonstrate how Gander uses notions of presence and absence to challenge established ways of comprehending and presenting information. In Your Family and Friends, various images are taken from magazines, books, and other publications, arranged on a white field, and photographed. The work includes a key that provides captions for the images, yet the relationship that Gander intends to develop between the photographs remains frustratingly yet intriguingly unidentified. The viewer is left with visual clues to piece together the artist’s intention or to develop one’s own rationale and understanding of why these particular images have been assembled.
